Chiesa di San Nicola di Myra, Locorotondo

The Orchestra of Angels
Picture

Dedicated to St. Nicholas, the patron saint of brides, children, sailors and several nations, it was erected around 1660. This small church has a simple white-walled facade, and its interior barrel vault is filled with images of musical angels, above frescoes showing scenes from the saint's life and miracles. A little angel carries three golden balls, a symbol of the saint's generous largesse. On the interior of the cupola bands of angels revolve around the Eternal Father whose hand signals a blessing. Below the second arch is an ancient bas relief of the crucifixion that predates the church and which has been more recently polychrome.
